Artist in Residence Program - Fall, 2011

Announcing the Artisans Guild Eastern Shore of Virginia’s new “Artist in Residence” Program

Beginning in mid-September and continuing throughout the fall, the Artisans Guild will be offering classes taught by their juried members.  These classes are meant to be introductory classes for all interested members of the community.  Most will be taught on Saturday and costs are being kept to a minimum.  Supply kits will be provided by the instructor for a small fee.  All classes will be taught in the Artisans Guild room of the Historic Onancock School. Sculpture, The Loss Wax Process –Taught by Guy Shover.  2 Saturdays, September 24th and October 1, 9 am to 2 pm. This advanced class is geared toward the student who wants to learn the fundamentals of sculpting in wax for the purpose of producing a bronze sculpture. Class cost is $70.00 and a material/tool cost of $30.00

Beginning Quilting – Taught by Kitty McCarthy.  2 Saturdays, October 15 and 22nd,   9 am to 2 pm.   This class is for those who want to quickly learn basic quilting techniques.  During the first class, the student will make a Christmas table runner and during the second, a Halloween table topper.
Class cost is $50.00, plus $25.00 for a materials kit (pre-cut) which includes all materials and thread needed to complete the projects.  Note:  You must have your own sewing machine and a grasp of how to use it.   

 Stained Glass Workshop.  Taught by Jeff Bender. Saturday October 29th 12-2:30 PM.  Never cut glass? No problem! Designed to be an easy and inexpensive first lesson in stained glass.  Learn basic techniques as you complete your sun catcher project. Tools and materials supplied. Maximum of 4 students. $30   

Seminole Patchwork – Wednesday, November 2.  In this one day class, students will learn five different Seminole patchwork techniques to be used in a sampler wall-hanging.
Cost of the class is $30.00.  Students will bring sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, basic sewing supplies and 5 or 6 coordinated fat quarters (small prints or solids).
There will be some fat quarters and thread available for purchase.  This class is intended for advanced beginners or intermediate quilters.

Getting the Most from your Digital Camera.  Taught by Dan Bowen.  Individual help in working through all those menus to get more than point and shoot from your camera.  Bring your camera, owner’s manual and questions.  The first hour will explain hieroglyphs and menus. The remaining time will be hands on and Q & A.   This will be a three hour class with only 3 to 4 students.  Multiple class dates call. Cost is $25.00.

Photo Studio Lighting.  Taught by Dan Bowen.    The photo studio lighting course is designed for the photography of art in a lighting studio.  The course will consist of a three to four hour class limited to 4 students.  Students will bring their digital camera, owner’s manual, a tripod (if possible), and 3 to 5 items to be photographed.  This advance class will deal with correct color reproductions with a three point light system.  Multiple class dates, call. The fee for the class is $40.00.
